The recent and rapid spread of coronavirus disease, also referred to as COVID-19, has shrouded the world under a blanket of consternation. The surgical masks, doomsday shopping, quarantines, and suspension of community gatherings and select services have all the imagery in tow of a science fiction dystopia. As the world looks on into a hazy, uncertain future, the crisis of the here and now heard rumbling in the background cannot be easily silenced.
Businesses across a multitude of industries worldwide are experiencing monumental hardship as they come face to face with an unprecedented foe. One industry to feel the impact, as swift as it has been catastrophic, is food and beverage. Restaurants, bars, breweries, event spaces, and those establishments occupying the fuzzy spaces in between have been halted in their tracks with government mandates limiting services, and in many cases, prompting complete shutdowns that have left teams of servers, bartenders, cooks, bussers, barbacks, managers, dishwashers, and more without an income for the foreseeable future. In Metro Detroit, where a handful of beloved staples were already unable to survive the winter slump, the response has been rousing. In a push for grassroots support, many establishments have turned to crowdsourcing through GoFundMe campaigns and other creative initiatives. Standby has pre-purchase options available for its home cocktail e-book, while Willis Show Bar is beginning a series-style showcase of its Friday nights with cocktail tutorials and tunes from the house band.
Despite the warranted stress of the situation, the sense of community (a kind of paradox when the phrase of the moment is “social distancing”) it inspired, or rather necessitated, is the best demonstration of the tenacity and resilience of this industry. As we’re given pause, wondering how we will feed our families and ourselves, continue to pay rent and utilities, and should we fall ill, what course of action we have to look forward to, the silver lining if one needs to see it burned into the page, is that this tribe won’t let you fall. We are a family. We are a community. With every resource at that can be mustered, we will keep each other safe and afloat. Share your knowledge, your wisdom, your good vibes, and good intentions, and sooner or later, we’ll make it through to the other side.
Below, you will find links to various resources and relief projects meant to aid during this time. Check them out, ask questions, and should you come across any effort we missed, feel free to let us know at email@example.com to see it added.
Stay safe, folks. #WeSurviveTogether
